MACHAKOS, Kenya – The quiet afternoon outside the Machakos County government offices was shattered on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, as a peaceful protest led by popular comedian and entrepreneur Sammy Kioko turned into a scene of chaos, physical confrontation, and eventually, an arrest that has sparked outrage across social media.

Kioko, best known for his “Kamba Comedy” and as a winner of Ultimate Comic KE, was arrested while demanding the settlement of a long-standing KSh 19 million debt. The comedian alleges that the county government owes his fashion and design business this amount for the supply of uniforms delivered during the 2023/2024 financial year.

The Confrontation Escalates

The incident began when Kioko, accompanied by fellow comedian Tom Daktari and other supporters, staged a demonstration to seek an audience with Governor Wavinya Ndeti’s administration. For months, Kioko has used his platform to highlight his financial distress, claiming that the unpaid bill has forced him to close his tailoring shops, lay off workers, and even vacate his home.

Witnesses and viral video clips from the scene show a tense standoff with county enforcement officers and ununiformed security personnel. The situation rapidly deteriorated when the officers moved in to disperse the group. In the ensuing scuffle, Kioko was reportedly assaulted, resulting in visible injuries. Colleagues at the scene, including comedian Nasra Yusuff, described the intervention as “brutally violent” and unnecessary for a peaceful petition.

From Protests to the Hospital Ward

Following the arrest and the physical altercation, Kioko’s health became a primary concern. He was initially taken to a police station but was quickly moved to Athi River for medical assessment. As his condition appeared to worsen, he was transferred to Kangundo Level 4 Hospital and eventually moved to Nairobi West Hospital for specialized treatment.

Photos shared by his peers showed the comedian in a hospital bed, a stark contrast to the energetic performer fans are used to seeing. The images have fueled a heated online debate regarding the “impunity” of local governments and the plight of young entrepreneurs who find themselves “crippled” by pending bills.

The County’s Defense: A Paperwork Puzzle?

In response to the growing public outcry, Machakos County Secretary Muya Ndambuki addressed the media, offering a different perspective. The county acknowledged that it has mechanisms to clear pending bills, but raised questions about the contractual arrangement.

”Unfortunately, certain persons are presenting themselves as having contracted with the county, but when we look at the books, we cannot directly place them in any contractual arrangement,” Ndambuki stated.

The county maintains that the tender was awarded to a registered company and that Kioko’s name does not appear as a director in their official records. They further alleged that previous deliveries were incomplete—a claim Kioko has vehemently denied, insisting he personally oversaw the entire supply chain.

What Lies Ahead

The “Sammy Kioko saga” has become a symbol of a much larger crisis in Kenya: the mountain of pending bills owed by devolved units to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Kioko has hinted that once he is discharged from the hospital, he will hold a comprehensive press briefing. He intends to provide “bulletproof” evidence of the services rendered and expose what he calls a system designed to frustrate young contractors. With fellow entertainers and activists rallying behind him, the pressure is mounting on the Machakos administration to provide a transparent resolution.

As the comedian recovers, the question remains: will this incident lead to a policy shift in how counties handle their debts, or will it remain a tragic footnote in the struggle of Kenyan youth trying to do business with the state?
